Beachy, windswept, and unassuming, Île de Ré is often seen as the antidote to the French Riviera. The beaches are sandy, the climate is mild, and the west coast sunsets are superior to the other side of the country. About two hours north of Bordeaux, a single bridge connects the island to the mainland, and the controlled access keeps Île de Ré quiet. So does its focus on bicycle culture, with more than 60 miles of bike paths snaking around the salt marshes and oyster huts that populate the island. Be prepared to shuck your own and bring along a bag that can hold an impromptu picnic and a bottle of Pineau, plus nautical separates that are ready for the ride.

CAMARGUE ON HORSEBACK

Perhaps best known for its salt, the coastal region in southern France is one-part southern bayou and another part rugged horse country. Located between the Mediterranean and the two arms of the Rhône River delta, Camargue is perpetually flooded, which means horseback is the best and only way to properly see the region, which sees more than 400 different bird species migrate through it. Western denim shirts, a concho belt, hand-lasted suede boots, and striped neckerchiefs are ready for the ride, while a foundation of white garments in sumptuous but sturdy fabrics come in handy when harvesting your own fleur de sel at Salins d’Aigues-Mortes.

The Rub’ al Khali, or Empty Quarter, is a stretch of desert that covers more than 250,000 square miles of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the defining landmark of Oman, and its serene views are what brings most travelers to the country. But Oman also has its capital, Muscat, with its 16th-century Portuguese buildings. Among the country’s Hajar Mountains, resorts like the Six Senses Zighy Bay and the St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat have popped up, offering literal oases amongst rugged, unspoiled landscapes straight out of The Arabian Nights. Marrakech might be Morocco’s more well-known destination, but Tangier has recently become a new hot spot in the North African country, especially with the opening of museums like the Villa Harris and the Tangier Museum of Contemporary Art, plus hotels such as the Fairmont Tazi Palace and the St. Regis La Bahia Blanca Resort in nearby Tamuda Bay. Those missing the Jardin Majorelle experience in Marrakech can get an even more intimate look at Yves Saint Laurent’s Moroccan life with a stay at Villa Mabrouka, the designer’s private sanctuary, which opened as a 12-room hotel in 2023.
